The Numbers Game

A million pairs of feet
breeze past defeated eyes
It's just the same as yesterday.
A billion pounds of steel and glass
fracture the sky
It's just the same as yesterday.
Do you look for them,
up there in the cocktail bar
Sipping twenty-three pound drinks
on the fifty-second floor?
Or are your still exactly the same?
Are you still playing the numbers game?

They're counting from the past
to the next kick in mouth
It's just the same as yesterday
As sure as those dollar bills
head from north to south
It's just the same as yesterday
Did you walk past them,
with your hair and stilettos
Feeling ten feet tall
while feeling absolutely nothing?
And are you still precisely the same?
Are you still playing the numbers game?

A hundred pairs of eyes
gaze at a tragic scene
It's just the same as yesterday
Another bag deployed,
but at least the floor gets clean
It's just the same as yesterday.
And while you stood and
talked about the tragedy
I'm sure I saw your mind
snap 'photo opportunity'
And you will always be exactly the same
You'll never stop playing the numbers game.
