Broken Merrygoround

Drew the curtains back

And saw the houses

Stacked like cars in a pile-up

And the trains fired past

Carrying all the switched off

Another shift closer to the grave.

And we are going to quit this town

I am going to step right off this

Broken merrygoround.

Stepped onto the street

and saw palaces of glass and gold

Like a bad joke in a good crowd,

And the suits strode in

Burning money in a beaten oil drum

Meant to keep the huddled masses warm.

And we are going to quit this town.

I am going to step right off this

Broken merry-go-round.

Went to the funfair

The candy floss dreams died in the air -

Like a cloud that couldn't rain

And the lights got turned off

With the last of the dreamers lost

On a black ride in a ruined town

And we are going to quit this now.

I am going to step right off this

Broken merry-go-round.
