I will never know now what I thought I knew then

I looked and I lingered by the end of the street we called home
I gazed through the night at the houses and the lights and had never felt so alone
It had come to this moment, this single breath, footstep and turn
And a pair of what once were lovers now torn asunder by what one never learned.

So I turned down once friendly roadways my mind driving me away on remote control
And I looked back to the time when, at this time of night you were mine to hold
To keep safe from all of life's evils, to aid you with all of my ken
Those moments will never come back and I will never know now what i thought i knew then.
